Understanding Malta’s Free Childcare Scheme

The Free Childcare Scheme in Malta was introduced to support families by helping parents balance work, education, and family life. Through this government initiative, eligible families can receive free childcare services for their children at licensed childcare centres such as Stepping Stones Early Learning Centre.

For many parents, the scheme makes it easier to return to work or continue their education while ensuring their child is cared for in a safe and nurturing environment.

Who Is Eligible for Free Childcare?

Parents can benefit from the scheme if they meet one of the following criteria:

  • Both parents (or guardians) are working, or
  • A single parent is working, or
  • Parents are studying and enrolled in a recognised diploma or degree programme.

The number of childcare hours covered by the scheme usually depends on the working hours of the mother or single parent.

What Ages Does the Scheme Cover?

The Free Childcare Scheme is available for children from infancy until they become eligible to attend Kindergarten 1.

Once a child becomes eligible to enter Kindergarten, the scheme ends and the child transitions into the school system.

How the Hours Work

The government provides childcare hours based on the parents’ employment or education schedule.

Parents are encouraged to book the hours they genuinely need. The scheme also allows a small flexibility allowance, usually around 10% extra hours, to help accommodate unexpected changes in schedule.

If families require childcare beyond the allocated hours, additional hours may be charged directly by the childcare centre.

Absences and Sick Leave

Children are allowed a certain level of absence under the scheme.

Parents should note that:

  • Children may have a monthly absence allowance based on their booked hours.
  • If a child is absent due to illness for more than three days, a medical certificate may be required before returning to the centre.

These guidelines help ensure that places are fairly allocated and that children’s wellbeing is properly supported.

Staying in Communication With the Centre

If there are any changes in working hours, study commitments, or childcare needs, parents should inform their childcare provider as soon as possible.

This allows the centre to adjust schedules and ensure that the correct number of hours is registered under the government scheme.

Why the Scheme Is Important for Families

The Free Childcare Scheme has made a significant difference for many families in Malta. By reducing childcare costs, it allows parents to:

  • return to work with peace of mind
  • continue their education
  • support their family financially
  • ensure their children are cared for in a safe learning environment

At the same time, children benefit from early learning experiences that support their development, social skills, and confidence.
