The FileGroup application was developed to be a files / directories combiner that groups files / directories to reach a precise size. This is very useful when you need to back up on size limited storage, without splitting anything. The group sizes can be any know storage size, or any other arbitrary size. This way there is no lost space when backing up. The created groups can be built on the hard drive by making new directories and copying, or moving, the files / directories of those groups. Doing this manually, you would try to select some files in the Explorer and check the total size to realize it’s too low, or too high, and try again, and again… Using FileGroup, you would have to click a button. FileGroup adds a button to the Explorer View (list view / selected view) by which you can drag-and-drop files / directories on the desktop from your hard drive. You can also move them. Files / directories you drag on the desktop are added as an instant group (folder) on the hard drive. If you are satisfied with the size of a group, you can right click the group and select Delete group. If you need to decrease size of a group, do not select files / directories to be moved first. Instead, select files / directories to be removed. They are not moved but deleted from the hard drive, meaning they are not lost (overwritten). Then select a group and right click it to select Delete group. This way we save space immediately. Once you have selected files / directories to be moved, FileGroup will make a list of all files / directories on the hard drive. Select the group to which they should be moved. You can move files / directories of multiple groups at once by holding shift while right clicking. When you select files / directories to be moved, be aware of the directory structure. Select files / directories for the right group. If you select the wrong directory, they will be moved to the wrong group. When you select a group to which files / directories to be moved, you have the option to create a new group on the hard drive with the files / directories. Just select the option where you want to have them. After all the files / directories you selected are moved to a group and backed up (thumb-drive), you can delete the group on the hard drive and expand the group back to the size it had before (if the files / directories were deleted and then moved). There are two main options: Accept any groups: This is the default option. It will create groups based on any files / directories found. You can make these groups yourself. Accept only X groups. This is for example for people who want a specific size. This can be used together with the “Max number of groups created” option. If you already have a file / folder in 2 groups, and drop it into this tab, it will merge both groups into the total number of allowed groups. 5. Mark as system file: If you place a file / folder into a group, this file / folder will be marked as system file. This will set the file / folder visible in Explorer. If you haven’t selected the option “Keep files with the same name”, and drop it into a group, the name of the file / folder will be changed to the name of the group. Getting started: 1. Download the file. Download the [FileGroup] executable to your computer. It is about 3 MB. 2. Extract the file. To do this, just double click the executable. The FileGroup application will start to install itself. 3. Run FileGroup. The FileGroup application will start and start backing up your files. Do a backup. You will see a progress dialog and when done, a summary dialog that will tell you the backup is finished. How it works: The FileGroup application does not need administrator privileges to run. It runs as the same user that has access to the file system. The application will determine the currently used drive on your computer, or the connected drive if using an external drive. It will also read any file size info, such as reserved sector information. When backing up files, it will pick any files/directories of any location on your hard disk (no matter what) that it finds to create an appropriate group. This is important, because it does not “find” what you want. It will try to find the smallest suitable sized file groups. It will create the groups on the hard disk, and copy, or move, the files / directories in those groups, when using a “create new group” option. When a group size is given, it will create the group files and directories with the provided group size. When moving a group, it will move the group and all the files / directories in the group, to the target directory. After moving, it will delete all the original group files and directories, and delete the original directory. This way the target folder is a new, clean, empty folder. If the target directory is a different drive, it will first move the group to that drive, and then delete the group from the old drive. Automatic Operation: After starting the FileGroup application, it is ready to start backing up. You can then create a new group by using the “New Group” button on the FileGroup main window. A new group will be created, and all the files in that new group will be backed up to the target location. An additional folder will be created for the new group, and all the files / directories in that folder will be copied, or moved.
